Accidents and Personal Injury in Albuquerque

accidents and personal injuryThe natural beauty, history and multiculturalism of Albuquerque make it one of the most unique and refreshing places to live in the United States. Unfortunately, with a population topping 900,000 in the Albuquerque metro area, it is unavoidable that not everyone plays by the rules, and accidents result. People are injured every day because someone else has been reckless, negligent or actively hostile toward them.

Some may remember headlines from 2015, which said New Mexico was home to the second-worst drivers in the country. Regardless of national comparisons, the NM Department of Health says motor vehicle accident injuries are the leading cause of injury death for people 1 to 24 years old in New Mexico. Youths and young adults 15 to 24 years old, and Native Americans have the highest motor vehicle accident death rate.

Distracted driving, speeding, fatigue and drunk driving are the leading causes of motor vehicle accident injuries, the Department of Health says. Alcohol is involved in one-third of fatal motor vehicle crashes in New Mexico.

In Bernalillo County (Albuquerque) alone there were:

  • 99 motor vehicle accident fatalities in 2016, up from 64 in 2015.
  • 635 alcohol-involved crashes in 2014 (the most recent year published), 31.1 percent of all alcohol-involved crashes statewide
  • 33 fatal crashes involving alcohol in 2014, 21.7 percent of all alcohol-involved fatalities statewide
  • A 50 percent increase in alcohol-related crashes from 2010 to 2014
  • Roughly 60 percent of all accidents in Albuquerque caused by distracted driving, whether texting, talking to passengers, or reaching for something in the vehicle.

Other preventable accidents leave New Mexico residents injured, too. Each day an average of five people die from injuries, another 40 are hospitalized due to injuries, more than 700 are examined in emergency departments, and more than 2,000 seek medical treatment for injuries at other health care facilities, according to the NM Department of Health. For example, slip-and-fall accidents are the leading cause of emergency room visits, hospitalizations and injury-related deaths for New Mexico residents 65 and older.

Most are unintentional injuries, such as happen in car accidents, slip-and-fall accidents or poisoning by legal or illegal drugs. But injuries can also be due to intentional criminal acts, such as assault, including sexual assault (rape), gun violence, robbery, etc.

Parnall Law attorneys assist those who have been injured when others are at fault, whether the harm was intentional or not. New Mexico law says people injured by others’ negligence, recklessness or criminal intent deserve to be compensated for their losses due to medical expenses, lost wages, pain, suffering and more. We believe they also deserve the formal acknowledgement that they were unjustly harmed, which a successful legal claim affirms.
